Paul Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony – premiered in 1934 by the Berliner Philharmoniker – will be performed in January 2027 under the baton of chief conductor Kirill Petrenko as part of the Biennale Signs & Wonders. Added to this are major symphonies by Bruckner, Mahler, and Sibelius, each combining sonic richness with visionary design in very different ways. Under the direction of Lahav Shani, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition can be experienced – a work as colourful as it is idiosyncratic, inspired by paintings created by a close friend. The influence of other arts also shapes Brett Dean’s violin concerto The Lost Art of Letter Writing, in which letters by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Hugo Wolf resonate. The soloist is violinist Isabelle Faust, renowned for her mastery across all musical styles and periods.
