The performance of Brahms’s passionate First Piano Concerto will likely mark another highlight in the successful collaboration between Kirill Petrenko, the Berliner Philharmoniker, and the fantastic Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov. The most significant contemporary rival of the symphonist Brahms was Bruckner, whose Eighth Symphony impresses with its monumental structure and at the same time touches listeners with its sensitivity. Tugan Sokhiev makes a case for Shostakovich’s rarely performed Twelfth Symphony, in which the composer once again reflects upon his difficult relationship with communism. The panorama of symphonies is completed by Schumann’s highly romantic Second Symphony. François-Xavier Roth conducts two French works based on literary sources, while Lahav Shani presents Mussorgsky’s famous fusion of music and painting.
