England in the west, Finland in the north, Tanzania in the south, and Syria in the east define the playing field of the World series in the 2026/27 season. Yet this only hints at the range of musical styles presented here. Although the group She’Koyokh is based in London, it is devoted to Eastern European music: with Anatolian love songs, ballads from the Balkans, and melancholy klezmer melodies. The band Jawa aims, with its program Last Breaths from Aleppo, to preserve Syrian music threatened by the long civil war, including the spiritual Sufi dance.
The ensemble Värttinä draws on the traditions of Karelia, the region today shared by Finland and Russia, performing with various instruments and warm‑hearted vocals. The polyrhythmic music of Tanzania is brought to us by the Zawose Queens, an aunt‑and‑niece duo who appear as multi‑instrumentalists, singers, and dancers. The ritual dances known as “pizzica tarantata” are said to heal wounds caused by the bite of a tarantula. That may be controversial from a scientific perspective; however, the ensemble Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino from Apulia in southern Italy, specialists in this musical tradition, demonstrates at each of its performances just how uplifting this music can be.
