At the invitation of the Berliner Philharmoniker
Info
The organists of the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris are among the superstars of their profession. Charles-Marie Widor held this post for 64 years, followed by the legendary Marcel Dupré, who shaped organ music in one of the world’s most famous churches for decades. Since February 2023, Karol Mossakowski has held the prestigious position of titular organist at Saint-Sulpice.
For his debut at the Philharmonie Berlin, he shares the stage with Andreas Wittmann, long-time oboist of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Together, they present a festive programme ranging from the Baroque to the Romantic era. In the grand finale, Karol Mossakowski pulls out all the stops with a resplendent work by Marcel Dupré – a fitting demonstration that, even after 60 years, the organ of the Philharmonie remains one of Europe’s finest concert hall instruments.

Karol Mossakowski is highly regarded both as an interpreter and as an improviser. The New York Classical Review has praised him for a “brilliant range of colours and dynamic nuances” as well as for his “extraordinary creativity and imagination.” Since February 2023, he has served as titular organist of Saint-Sulpice, the grand parish church in Paris’s Odéon district, following in the footsteps of composers such as Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré. Born in Poland, Mossakowski studied in Poznań and at the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Olivier Latry, Thierry Escaich and Philippe Lefebvre. A prizewinner at numerous international competitions – among them the Prague Spring International Music Competition (2013) and the Grand Prix de Chartres (2016) – he appears as a soloist throughout Europe and performs with leading orchestras under conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung, Kent Nagano and Mikko Franck. In 2023, he gave the world premiere of Philippe Hersant’s organ concerto Unstern with the Orchestre National de Lyon, and in the same year served as Artist in Residence with the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. Improvisation holds a special place in his artistic work, including performances accompanying silent films. As a composer, he focuses primarily on sacred vocal music; his most recent work, Visages célestes for choir and two organs, received its premiere in Paris in May 2025.
