Kirill Petrenko won enthusiastic acclaim for his Scriabin before his appointment as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker; now, he returns to this eccentric yet visionary composer with a performance of his Third Symphony. Revolutionary sounds of a different kind can be heard in the work of Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. Great composers from the classical and romantic periods – Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner – are also on the programmes of this series. And Raphaël Pichon brings the full splendour of the Baroque to life with Bach’s Mass in B minor. Solo performances by pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and violinist Janine Jansen – our Artist in Residence – are not to be missed. Strauss’ Don Quixote offers a special encounter with two members of the Berliner Philharmoniker: first solo violist Diyang Mei and first solo cellist Ludwig Quandt.
