Herbert Blomstedt’s Bruckner interpretations have been acclaimed for their unique combination of serenity, intensity, and depth. In this series, he conducts the Seventh Symphony, which established the composer’s fame – Daniel Barenboim, Petr Popelka, and Tugan Sokhiev bring central works from the German-Austrian tradition – by Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann. Sokhiev’s programme juxtaposes Mendelssohn and Berlioz as part of our season theme Kontrovers!, exploring the vastly different ways in which the two composers shaped early romanticism. Kirill Petrenko and Jakub Hrůša bring us works by eastern European composers whose distinctive voices left an indelible mark on 20th-century music.  Hrůša’s concert offers a rare chance to hear his Czech compatriot Martinů’s compelling First Symphony.
