Two of Stravinsky’s legendary ballets are featured in this series – Kirill Petrenko conducts Petrushka, while rising star Klaus Mäkelä brings the vividly Firebird. Two works by Richard Strauss are also featured: Also sprach Zarathustra, inspired by Nietzsche, and a suite filled with waltzes from Der Rosenkavalier. Franz Welser-Möst, returning to the orchestra after a long absence, conducts the suite. His guest appearance, as well as the concert with Daniel Barenboim, also features music by Schubert. Tugan Sokhiev navigates the emotional turmoil of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, while Gil Shaham plays Alban Berg’s violin concerto – turmoil of an entirely different kind.
