Our world music series this season begins with the Malian singer Oumou Sangaré. Raised in dire poverty, she now uses her prominence as a Grammy-winning artist and UN Goodwill Ambassador to advocate for women's rights. In her programme Timbuktu, the artist combines blues and rock with elements of the music of her West African homeland, all delivered by her warm, powerful voice.
Another distinctive artist and activist for the rights of her people is the Sami singer-songwriter Mari Boine. As she herself puts it, her voice carries “a thousand-year connection” to her ancestors. The northern European Sami people today live in a landscape whose vastness and crystalline beauty Mari Boine and her ensemble evoke through hypnotic sounds.
The Portuguese Eurovision Song Contest winner Salvador Sobral has long described his singer-songwriter colleague Sílvia Pérez Cruz as an “endless source of inspiration.” Now, the two will perform together in an evening filled with poetic voices and moods.
One constant feature of our world music series is flamenco. Guitarist Tomatito presents the genre with a mix of relaxed ease and breathtaking virtuosity. Born into a Spanish family of musicians, he started performing at the age of ten and blends the musical language of his homeland with a strong affinity for jazz in his pieces.
