Celebrated for its rhythmically incisive and electrifying interpretations, the Quatuor Ébène has the rare ability to combine absolute fidelity to the score with unrestrained spontaneity. Over the course of two seasons, the ensemble will perform all 16 of Ludwig van Beethoven’s string quartets in the Chamber Music Hall of the Philharmonie – a project the quartet itself compares to “climbing Mount Everest.” Audiences will experience a journey through an extraordinary range of sonic and emotional landscapes, as demonstrated in the first two evenings of the cycle.

The other two string quartets featured in the series are renowned for their adventurous spirit and their bold explorations beyond the familiar. Brooklyn Rider – whose name alludes to the interdisciplinary artist group Der blaue Reiter – pairs a work by Viennese classicist Joseph Haydn with a quartet by Philip Glass, the pioneer of Minimal Music. The young, Berlin-based Vision String Quartet also presents a strikingly contrasting programme: Béla Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet, still gripping in its uncompromising modernity, is followed by jazz and pop music.
