The Catalan viol virtuoso and conductor Jordi Savall, to whom the Berliner Philharmoniker dedicate a special tribute this season, is one of the most original and knowledgeable figureheads of Early Music. His explorations of Southern European and North African traditions have expanded the repertoire in remarkable ways. Thanks to his deep understanding of historical performance practice, he also brings fresh perspectives to classical works. This is reflected in this series as well, when Jordi Savall and his ensemble Le Concert des Nations perform Mozart’s Requiem.

Like Jordi Savall, Raphaël Pichon appears this season both in concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker and in the Originalklang series. Having first made a name for himself as a countertenor in his youth, he is now internationally successful with his choir and orchestra ensemble Pygmalion. Together, they paint a musical portrait of the Bach family with poignant vocal works, showcasing the distinct styles of its many composers.

Music by Johann Sebastian Bach also features in the 30th-anniversary concert of the Berliner Barock Solisten. The programme includes two Brandenburg Concertos of contrasting character: the Third, with its dark-hued string sound, and the magnificently brilliant Concerto No. 2. Bach’s friend Georg Philipp Telemann is also represented with a selection of vividly colourful solo concertos.

With his radiant voice, musical curiosity, and charming personality, Philippe Jaroussky has won the hearts of audiences worldwide. While his repertoire spans centuries, baroque music remains his true specialty. His latest programme is dedicated entirely to one of the most painful, but also expressive emotions: jealousy.

A group of thirteen musicians holding string instruments stands on a wooden concert stage, posing and smiling for a photo. Several empty chairs and music stands are visible in the background.
