The Mahler Chamber Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe have been bringing together the best of two worlds for decades: the spirit of chamber music, where every individual musician plays a crucial role, and the symphonic ideal, which places collective sound at the forefront.
In the Mahler Chamber Orchestra’s concert with violist Antoine Tamestit, Bach’s ingenious mastery of fugue meets the deeply personal expression of Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony. Similarly, in the Chamber Orchestra of Europe’s concert with Simon Rattle, ancient compositional forms intertwine with emotional intensity. By contrast, the concert conducted by Antonio Pappano is characterised by dance-like energy and the distinctive local colours of Czech and Spanish music. Violinist María Dueñas and pianist Alexander Lonquich are both charismatic soloists who, as sensitive chamber musicians, are perfectly suited to the concept of the series.
