Richard Strauss is featured twice in Series N: Kirill Petrenko conducts the massively orchestrated tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra, while François-Xavier Roth presents the elegiac, chamber-like Metamorphosen – a wistful retrospective from the composer. Alongside Mozart’s rapid Figaro Overture, his dramatic C minor piano concerto will also be performed, with the solo part taken by Yefim Bronfman, who has been a guest of the Berliner Philharmoniker for over 40 years. Schumann’s Second Symphony, conducted by Alan Gilbert, contains one of the most beautiful slow movements of the Romantic era, while Mahler’s Seventh offers a wide range of moods and tonal shades: funeral marches and nocturnes are followed by a triumphant finale.
