Richard Strauss achieved something remarkable with Also sprach Zarathustra: he created, on the basis of Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical treatise, a composition full of sonic splendor and sophistication. Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker perform the tone poem in the F Series, as well as Humperdinck’s magical Hänsel und Gretel, for which the Philharmonie transforms into an opera stage. Mahler and Sibelius wrote symphonies that, in very different ways, lie between late Romanticism and modernism. With Gustavo Dudamel and Sakari Oramo, two distinguished interpreters of these composers take to the podium. While Maxim Emelyanychev conducts Haydn and Mozart, Jakub Hrůša presents Brahms’s beautiful First Serenade, one of the works with which the composer paved his way toward the symphony.
