Beethoven gave powerful expression to his tense relationship with religion in the Missa solemnis. The performance of this work as part of the Biennale Signs & Wonders marks another high point for the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko in their ongoing, intensive engagement with Beethoven. This series also features conducting debuts by Maxime Pascal, who was recently appointed to the artistic direction of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Composer in Residence Brett Dean. The conductor Iván Fischer and violinist Christian Tetzlaff have long been associated with the Philharmoniker – and the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Berliner Philharmoniker look back on nearly half a century of making music together when they perform Schumann’s enchanting cello concerto in June 2027.
