Weighty symphonies from the late Romantic period and modern era, as well as Beethoven’s principal sacred work, the Missa Solemnis conducted by Kirill Petrenko, will be featured in Series D. With the powerful and intricately woven Eighth Symphony, Marek Janowski continues his acclaimed Bruckner interpretations with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Music by Haydn and Mahler’s Fifth Symphony are entrusted to Iván Fischer, a wonderful “native speaker” of the Austrian-Hungarian repertoire. Paavo Järvi showcases the expressiveness of Russian music from the 20th century, while Dima Slobodeniouk opens a panorama of early German Romanticism with music by Schumann and Mendelssohn. Finally, Simon Rattle, through a performance of the evocative and dark tone poem Taras Bulba, once again expresses his great love for the music of Janáček.
