Beethoven’s monumental Missa solemnis combines sonic and transcendental grandeur with human expression. Kirill Petrenko conducts the work for two occasions: as part of our Biennale Signs & Wonder and in remembrance of the composer, whose 200th anniversary of death will be observed in 2027. Series A also presents two further monumental vocal-instrumental compositions from the 19th century: Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony” and Berlioz’s oratorio L’Enfance du Christ, which has not been performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1986. After his successful Philharmonic debut in 2022, Maxim Emelyanychev returns to the orchestra and will take on the solo part himself in Haydn’s D-major piano concerto. Paavo Järvi conducts what is probably Prokofiev’s most gripping symphony, while Klaus Mäkelä leads Sibelius’s last – and most mysterious – symphony.
