The Brandenburg Concertos are among the jewels of Baroque music: colorful writing for strings and winds, virtuosic instrumental solos, and rhythmic verve unite in Bach’s contribution to the genre of the concerto grosso in an unsurpassed way. Bach Collegium Japan, perhaps the most important bridge-builder between the European and Asian Baroque worlds, will perform all six concertos in a single evening under the direction of Masato Suzuki to open our period-instrument series.
The French ensemble Le Consort has made a name for itself with its refreshing interpretations in the genre of the trio sonata. In May, the group invites listeners into Antonio Vivaldi’s Venice, a laboratory of the most ingenious and original music of the 18th century. The expertise of French ensembles in international Baroque music is also demonstrated in the concert by Il Caravaggio, the ensemble founded by harpsichordist and conductor Camille Delaforge. At the beginning and end of their program, works by Henry Purcell can be heard – alongside Benjamin Britten, without doubt the most important British composer.
Naturally, vocal music has its place in the series alongside instrumental works: when the ensemble Les Accents performs Christmas music by Alessandro Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli in December under the direction of violinist Thibault Noally, two genuine concert and opera stars of early music will appear – mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux and sopranist Bruno de Sá.
As part of an additional concert, the internationally successful ensemble Il pomo d’oro will appear. The name (meaning “golden apple”) is taken from Antonio Cesti’s opera Il pomo d’oro, whose premiere featured a horse ballet and a spectacular fireworks display. Sparks will also fly in the Berlin concert, especially as the countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński – acclaimed far beyond specialist circles – lets his wonderfully lyrical and agile voice be heard.
