As part of the Biennale Signs & Wonders – on faith, hope and doubt, two visionary works come together that open up different perspectives on religion, identity and hope. Mendelssohn’s “Reformation Symphony” combines Protestant tradition with romantic expressiveness. In the second half, Noam Sheriff’s monumental oratorio Mechaye Hametim (“The Resurrection of the Dead”) can be heard – one of the most important works of Israeli music of the 20th century, and a moving exploration of memory, loss and renewal. With the American baritone Eric Owens, New York cantor Azi Schwartz, the Moran Choirs from Israel and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra under Steven Sloane, a distinguished line-up of performers comes together for this evening.
