In 2022, Yunchan Lim became the youngest winner in the history of the prestigious Van Cliburn Competition, launching an international career at the age of 18. Before making his debut as a soloist with the Berliner Philharmoniker next May, the South Korean pianist appears in our Piano series with an all-Mozart programme. Featured works include the graceful, rococo-inspired Sonata in D major K. 284, the dark Sonata in A minor K. 310 and the Fantasy in D minor.

Background
Biography
“I want to express the beauty of music as it is, without adding unnecessary emotion,” said Yunchan Lim after winning the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022. At 18, he was the youngest winner in the competition’s history. Hailed by The Dallas Morning News as “a one-in-a-million talent”, the South Korean pianist has enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame. He has been praised for the restraint and serenity of his playing, even in the most demanding Romantic repertoire, and for combining exceptional virtuosity with sensitivity to musical colour and structure.
Yunchan Lim began playing the piano at the age of seven and attended the Seoul Arts Center Music Academy. At 13, he moved to the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts, which offers a highly individualised approach to musical education. There, he met the Korean-American pianist and teacher Minsoo Sohn. After two years at the Korea National University of Arts, Lim continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, under the guidance of his mentor Minsoo Sohn.
