Info
In 1933, four Jewish musicians were members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra:
concertmaster Szymon Goldberg, violinist Gilbert Back, and cellists Nicolai Graudan and
Joseph Schuster. Because of their heritage and faith, they were systematically marginalised
by the Nazi regime, and ultimately forced into exile. The Berliner Philharmoniker
commemorate their Jewish members – with the laying of four Stolpersteine (memorial
cobblestones, literally “stumbling stones”) in front of the Philharmonie Berlin and a
subsequent memorial concert in the Chamber Music Hall.
In it, presenter Shelly Kupferberg introduces the fates and artistic contributions of the four musicians. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker pay tribute to them with music by Johann Sebastian Bach and works by Erwin Schulhoff and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, two composers whose music was banned under Nazi rule.
The laying of the Stolpersteine is open to the public and the concert can be attended with a
donation of at least 5 euros in favour of the Margot Friedländer Foundation.
