Info

“Chopin’s music is so rich and moves me deeply. I simply love it,” says Yulianna Avdeeva. Her close connection to the composer comes as no surprise – after all, the pianist won the legendary Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2010, the first woman to do so since Martha Argerich. She impressed the jury with her sensitive and poetic playing. In this concert, Yulianna Avdeeva combines some of Chopin’s most beloved pieces – among them the poignantly beautiful Fantaisie in F minor and the brilliant Grande Polonaise – with music by Władysław Szpilman. The composer and pianist, whose life story became widely known through the film The Pianist, draws heavily on Chopin’s musical language in his own works.

Background

Biography

Yulianna Avdeeva

Since winning the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010, Yulianna Avdeeva has established herself as one of the leading pianists of her generation. While Chopin remains a central figure in her artistic life, Avdeeva’s repertoire encompasses a much broader range of music.  In 2025, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, she explored the composer’s 24 Preludes and Fugues Op. 87 in concerts, on disc and through her online #AvdeevaShostakovichProject.

Avdeeva has appeared in recital at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw and the Vienna Musikverein, and as a soloist with orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. Born in Moscow, she studied at the Gnessin School, in Zurich and at the International Piano Academy Lake Como. She now lives in Munich.
