Info

In the footsteps of Joseph Haydn: Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt, one of Austria’s most beautiful Baroque palaces, was a glittering social centre in the 18th century under Prince Nikolaus I – and also the composer’s long-standing place of employment. As court Kapellmeister, he developed new musical forms here, including the symphony. At this year’s European Concert, Kirill Petrenko and the Berliner Philharmoniker will perform one of Haydn’s overtures alongside works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, whose work built on Haydn’s legacy, developing it and reinterpreting it in their own ways. The soloist in Tchaikovsky’s graceful Variations on a Rococo Theme is the cellist Gautier Capuçon.

The thirty-fifth Europakonzert is taking place at Schloss Esterházy, for many years the home of Joseph Haydn and, as such, a site of tremendous musical and historical importance. It is only logical, then, that it is one of Haydn’s works that opens the programme under Kirill Petrenko on 1 May. Let us take a closer look at this musically significant place.
