Info

The trauma of the Thirty Years’ War was still palpable in the late 17th century: life could end abruptly and unexpectedly. Responding to these fears, composers created comforting, meditative, and spiritual music. The ensemble Pygmalion and its founder Raphaël Pichon immerse us in this sound world with their programme Good Night, World. Featuring sacred music by Dieterich Buxtehude, Philipp Heinrich Erlebach, Nicolaus Bruhns, and members of the Bach family, the works evoke sorrow, pain, and hope in the Baroque age.

Biographies

Pygmalion & Raphaël Pichon

In 2006, Raphaël Pichon founded the choir and orchestra ensemble Pygmalion, which quickly became a key force in the world of historically informed performance. Raphaël Pichon studied voice, violin, and piano at the Paris conservatoire and sang as a countertenor under the direction of Jordi Savall, Gustav Leonhardt, and Ton Koopman. As a conductor, he appears with major international symphony orchestras. Under his baton, Pygmalion represents a performance culture that combines historical authenticity with emotional immediacy – not only in early music, but also in classical and romantic repertoire.

With programs that often build bridges between different eras, the ensemble has performed at venues such as the Philharmonie de Paris, the BBC Proms, Bozar Brussels, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Cologne Philharmonie. Pygmalion is the resident ensemble of the Opéra National de Bordeaux, and has collaborated with renowned stage directors including Jetske Mijnssen, Katie Mitchell, and Romeo Castellucci. For several years now, the musicians have also been engaged in developing new approaches to music education and outreach in the Bordeaux region.
