Info

Brooklyn Rider views the string quartet as a form of mini-democracy: a collaboration between equal voices, each with rights and responsibilities. Their programme Citizenship Notes brings this idea to life – starting with a quartet by Joseph Haydn, pioneer of the genre and master of balanced voice-leading. Works by Matana Roberts, Gabriel Kahane, Bob Dylan, and Osvaldo Golijov explore burning questions for modern societies from various perspectives. In contrast, Philip Glass’s meditative string quartet is a deeply personal and touching requiem for his late friend, the painter Brian Buczak.

Biography

Brooklyn Rider

“Four classical musicians who play with the energy of young rock stars” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). For 15 years now, Brooklyn Rider, praised by The New York Times for their “radical emotional range”, has been showing  just how modern the time-honored string quartet genre can be. With its unquenchable curiosity for musical adventure, the New York–based ensemble has secured a prominent place in the international concert scene, propelled by its adventurous contemporary repertoire and unexpected collaborations with artists such as Iranian kamancheh (spike fiddle) master Kayhan Kalhor, American bluegrass and jazz musician Béla Fleck, and Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter.

The quartet’s members studied at the most prestigious conservatories in the United States, including the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. Their repertoire spans Viennese Classicism, non-European traditions, and American roots music, extending all the way to the many voices of today’s composers. By commissioning new works from Osvaldo Golijov, Andreia Pinto Correia, Conrad Tao, Dan Trueman, Akshaya Tucker, and many others, Brooklyn Rider continues to expand and enrich the string quartet repertoire.
