The National Concert Hall in Taipei is one of the world’s most distinctive music venues. Its exterior is dominated by classical Chinese architecture, towering above a vast open square. But inside lies a traditional concert hall with outstanding acoustics. This was the imposing setting for the first of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s concerts with Kirill Petrenko on this year’s visit to Taiwan. The programme, which received enthusiastic acclaim, included Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin and Stravinsky’s Petrushka , works which give the orchestra’s soloists the opportunity to display their full artistry.
