The Berliner Philharmoniker and their Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko present an extraordinary tribute to Arnold Schoenberg: a high-quality edition tracing the composer’s fascinating journey from the late-Romantic Verklärte Nacht to the powerful Variations for Orchestra.
The collection includes, among others, the Chamber Symphony No. 1, the virtuosic Violin Concerto with Patricia Kopatchinskaja, as well as the rarely performed oratorio Die Jakobsleiter, featuring distinguished soloists and the Rundfunkchor Berlin. The recordings were made between 2019 and 2024 – marking Schoenberg’s 150th anniversary.
The exclusive hardcover edition, designed by American artist Peter Halley, comprises three CDs, a Blu-ray with concert videos, and, as a bonus, a recording of Die Jakobsleiter. An accompanying book with essays by leading Schoenberg experts offers further insights into the composer’s work.
For more than a century, Schoenberg’s music has been an integral part of the Berliner Philharmoniker’s programmes. With this new release, the orchestra wishes to show that his oeuvre is far more than an intellectual construct: it is music of profound expression and passion.
The edition is available from berliner-philharmoniker-recordings.com and at selected retailers.
