The musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker are deeply saddened by the loss of former member Peter Dohms, violinist, who died on 31 August 2026 at the age of 87 following a short, serious illness. Born in Berlin in 1939, Peter Dohms began taking violin lessons at the age of ten with Georg Diburtz, a pupil of Joseph Joachim and a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He continued his studies at the music academies in Berlin and Freiburg, where his teachers included Siegfried Borries, then First Concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and Sándor Végh. After positions in Bad Brückenau and with the Sándor Végh Chamber Orchestra, Dohms joined the Berliner Philharmoniker in 1963 as a member of the First Violins. He retired in 2004 after 41 years with the orchestra. As a chamber musician, he was also a long-standing member of the Philharmonische Virtuosen chamber ensemble.
