The violinist Janine Jansen, this season’s Artist in Residence of the season, has a particular fondness for Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto: “It’s a romantic, dreamy piece, but at the same time virtuosic and angular,” she says. In this series, she performs the work with Simon Rattle. Principal players of the Berliner Philharmoniker also take on solo roles: Noah Bendix-Balgley and Bruno Delepelaire shape the captivating dialogue between violin and cello in Brahms' Double Concerto, and Albrecht Mayer performs Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s virtuosic Oboe Concerto. Andrew Norman’s Play offers a humorous take on modernity. Music of new beginnings can be heard in Schumann’s Spring Symphony and Beethoven’s “Eroica”, inspired by the ideals of the French Revolution.
