In their last symphonies, Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner drew on the experience of their entire lives as composers. There are currently few conductors who are as familiar with this music as Daniel Barenboim and Herbert Blomstedt. After successful debuts, Lahav Shani and Klaus Mäkelä will once again appear with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the former with modern classics, the latter with Richard Strauss’ Alpine Symphony. As a depiction of nature, the work is in the tradition of Beethoven’s "Pastoral", with which chief conductor Kirill Petrenko is making a contribution to the Berliner Philharmoniker’s current Biennale entitled Paradise Lost? On the threat to nature. Jakub Hrůša has now firmly established himself as one of the orchestra’s guest conductors and presents an opera suite by the brilliant maverick Leoš Janáček.
