In the eagerly awaited debut of conductor Joanna Mallwitz, the programme includes an important work in the history of the Berliner Philharmoniker: the orchestra premiered Paul Hindemith’s striking and gripping symphony Mathis der Maler in 1934 under Wilhelm Furtwängler’s baton. Andris Nelson will celebrate two composer anniversaries with Anton Bruckner’s overwhelming Eighth Symphony (200th birthday on 4 September 2024) and Daniel Harding with orchestral pieces by Arnold Schoenberg (150th birthday on 13 September 2024). Chief conductor Kirill Petrenko will devote himself to Antonín Dvořák’s darkly powerful Seventh Symphony, while honorary conductor Daniel Barenboim will perform melancholy late works by Gustav Mahler. In his second programme with the Philharmoniker, Juanjo Mena takes us into the colourful, shimmering magical world of Ravel’s ballet music Daphnis et Chloé.
