The monumental final movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 130 overwhelmed his contemporaries to such an extent that the composer published his “Grosse Fuge” as an independent work and supplied a more moderate Finale. Quatuor Ébène, however, goes all in — as it always does: its performance of all of Beethoven’s String Quartets, spread across two seasons in the Philharmonie, concludes with the original version of the work. In a statement, the Ébènes describe the 16‑part cycle as an “absolute experience, a consummate musical journey.” This applies no less to the performers than to the audience. Beethoven’s group of works, his most important alongside the symphonies and piano sonatas, draws on techniques of early music and, in the radical experiments of the late style, points ahead to modernism – a journey that in a sense stretches from the Baroque to Bartók.
In the 2026/27 season, we have reserved the entire quartet series for Quatuor Ébène’s Beethoven interpretations. The visionary moments of the late works, the wonderful lyricism of the slow movement from Op. 59 No. 1, and the sonic splendor of the “Harp Quartet” lie in the hands of an ensemble that captivates with power, finesse, and irresistible rhythmic drive. The performance cycle concludes in 2027, the year of the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death.
