The Berliner Philharmoniker will return to the Salzburg Easter Festival – in grand style. Kirill Petrenko will conduct Das Rheingold, the “preliminary evening” of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, a cycle of works that explores every major theme from world domination to undying love. The director is Kirill Serebrennikov. There are also concerts showcasing works from the orchestra’s repertoire: Haydn’s Die Schöpfung under Daniel Harding, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique under Tugan Sokhiev, and, with Kirill Petrenko, Mahler’s “Symphony of a Thousand”. Listeners who enjoy hearing members of the orchestra in more intimate settings will have ample opportunity to do so at a series of chamber recitals.
