Lightness, joie de vivre, and plenty of “Italianità”: Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony draws on the sights and sounds of his Italian travels, from religious processions to exuberant dances. The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Felix Krieger, pairs the work with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s elegant Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra, featuring Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson, principal flute of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and harpist Kateryna Savinka as soloists. The programme opens with the overture to The Falcon by Mozart’s Ukrainian contemporary Dmitry Bortnyansky. While he worked at the court of the Russian Tsar, Bortnyansky learned his craft in Italy, and the overture shows that Italian influence.
