Herbert von Karajan’s Der Ring des Nibelungen – a legendary recording. The Berliner Philharmoniker have returned to Richard Wagner time and again, and much of that journey has been captured on record. This season, Kirill Petrenko conducts Die Walküre in a staged production at the Salzburg Easter Festival and in concert in Berlin. Taking this project as its starting point, a ‘quartet of critics’ discusses Wagner recordings and the orchestra’s Wagner tradition in a panel talk held in collaboration with the German Record Critics’ Award (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik) – an association of music journalists who honour outstanding music and spoken-word productions. Joining the debate: Manuel Brug, Kai Luehrs-Kaiser, Regine Müller and Markus Thiel.
