Info
Nature as a mirror of the soul: star baritone Christian Gerhaher performs two sonorous, melancholic vocal scenes that reflect this concept. He appears first in “Der Einsame im Herbst” from Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and then in a wonderful discovery by Alphons Diepenbrock – a composer held in high esteem by Mahler. From Diepenbrock we hear the orchestral song Im großen Schweigen, in which a person standing by the sea reflects on the limits of language and thought. Franz Schubert’s “Great” Symphony in C major shows the full emotional spectrum of Romanticism, from exuberant joy to profound despair. Conductor Markus Poschner makes his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
