At the invitation of the Berliner Philharmoniker
Info
At a Biennale devoted to faith, hope and doubt, Olivier Messiaen is an essential presence. Profoundly shaped by his Catholic faith, Messiaen was acutely aware of the tension between the religious inspiration of his music and the largely secular audiences for whom it was written. With his monumental piano cycle Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus, Messiaen created 20 contemplative, mystical and intensely expressive meditations on the Christ Child. Bertrand Chamayou has lived with this work since the age of nine. According to the pianist, it has had a lasting influence on his artistic outlook.
