Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto is one of Lisa Batiashvili’s signature pieces. With her interpretation of the work, as brilliant as it is deeply felt, the violinist won the Sibelius Competition and began her international career. This evening, the concerto is preceded by Lotta Wennäkoski’s Verdigris – a shimmering play of sound and a subtle homage to Sibelius. To mark the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, conductor Robin Ticciati and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe also perform his Fifth Symphony: from a striking four-note motif emerges one of music’s most compelling dramatic journeys, leading from darkness into light.
