The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra presents two powerful works shaped by war and oppression. Jean Sibelius composed his heroic tone poem Finlandia as a protest against Tsarist consorship. His student Leevi Madetoja processed the horrors of the Finnish Civil War in his dramatic Second Symphony. Between these pieces, the programme features the melancholic violin concerto by Ukrainian composer Reinhold Glière, performed by Aleksey Semenenko, Professor of Violin at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. On the podium: Jascha von der Goltz, winner of the 2021 International Panula Conducting Competition.

The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra (KSO) is renowned for its commitment to Ukraine’s musical heritage and plays a vital role in representing Ukrainian culture on the international stage. Founded in 1979, the orchestra has a repertoire which spans from the 16th century to today’s younger generation of composers; the ensemble regularly presents Ukrainian works in dialogue with the western European canon.
In 2022 the KSO toured Europe with performances at venues including the Rudolfinum in Prague, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus, the Philharmonie Berlin, the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, the Philharmonie de Paris, and Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie. That summer the orchestra found a temporary home in Gera, Thuringia; in 2023 the Berliner Philharmoniker assumed patronage of the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra. Since August 2024, the KSO has held a residency in Monheim am Rhein as part of the Monheimer Kulturwerke.
A graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, Jascha von der Goltz first attracted international attention in 2019 when he won Second Prize at the Jeunesse Musicale International Conducting Competition. In 2021 he went on to win First Prize at the International Panula Conducting Competition, which led to invitations to guest conduct across Europe. He completed his master’s degree in conducting at the Zurich University of the Arts under Johannes Schlaefli. From 2021 to 2023 he served as assistant conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur in Switzerland.
Since 2024, von der Goltz has been Associate Conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra, working closely with Chief Conductor David Afkham. Coming from a musical family, he plays cello and percussion in addition to his principal instrument, the piano.
Ukrainian violinist Aleksey Semenenko won the 2012 Young Concert Artists Auditions in New York and took Second Prize at the 2015 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Since then he has pursued an active international career with performances across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Born in Odessa in 1988, Semenenko began violin lessons at the age of six.
His talent was recognized early, and not long after he made his solo debut with the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. He later continued his studies in Cologne, completing his concert exam under Zakhar Bron. Since 2021, Semenenko has been Professor of Violin at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.
