The final stop on their Japan tour took the Berliner Philharmoniker to a spectacular setting: Kawaguchiko, right at the foot of Mount Fuji. There, the orchestra and Gustavo Dudamel performed their Waldbühne programme at the Stellar Theater – where Japan’s highest mountain was even briefly visible in full clarity during the dress rehearsal. Seven hundred schoolchildren watched the rehearsal with bated breath. And in the evening, the audience clapped and whistled along flawlessly to Berliner Luft. The sheet music for the iconic song was placed on every seat, with the German lyrics written out phonetically in Japanese script.
