On Sunday, 17 September, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko gave their first guest performance at the Isarphilharmonie. The occasion: the 50th anniversary of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation, which had also commissioned a new composition by Márton Illés for this birthday. Enjoy impressions of the interim concert hall and the concert.

Isarphilharmonie from the outside, a brick building. — Hello Isarphilharmonie! The full name of the concert hall is Isarphilharmonie des Gasteigs HP8 ( which is an abbreviation of the street address Hans-Preißinger-Str. 8).

Inside the Isarphilharmonie. — The Isarphilharmonie currently functions as an interim venue for the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and guests while the Gasteig is being renovated.

Stage floor and chairs. — ... and serve the very impressive acoustics of this concert hall.

Photos of the empty hall. — Just before the concert began the stage was packed, as the large orchestration of the evening’s pieces took up (almost) every inch of space!

Orchestra on stage. — Orchestra onstage! The evening’s programme consisted of Iannis Xenakis’ “Jonchaies”, Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s “Gesangeszene” with baritone Christian Gerhaher, György Kurtág’s “Stele” and a new composition by Márton Illés titled “Lég-szín-tér”.

Christian Gerhaher singing in front of the orchestra. — This was a home game for singer Christian Gerhaher. The internationally celebrated baritone lives in Munich and has a large local fan community in the city.

Orchestra and audience on stage. — The concert was sold out well in advance, and the Munich audience occupied all 1800 seats this evening! Thank you, Munich!
