When the Berliner Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan travelled to Tokyo for the first time in 1957, it was a pioneering achievement – and the start of a unique friendship between the orchestra and its Japanese audience. Viola-player and orchestra board member Walter Küssner and principal cellist Ludwig Quandt look back on this long-standing partnership.
