This, too, is Education & Outreach: making music together, learning from one another and inspiring young people across borders to fall in love with music. On Saturday, Times Square became an open-air stage for a meeting of football and music: The Times Square Cup took place for the first time as part of Borussia Dortmund’s new international programme, the BVB World Street Series. Hundreds of young players, football figures, content creators, local residents and spectators came together for a day celebrating the game. Among them were musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Before heading to Times Square, the musicians rehearsed at Carnegie Hall. After the awards ceremony and trophy presentation, they joined the 100-strong New Jersey Youth Chorus to perform Verdi’s Triumphal March, specially arranged for the occasion by composer Stefan Behrisch. The piece is traditionally played in Dortmund as BVB’s players run onto their home pitch. The programme also included the club anthems Leuchte auf, mein Stern and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

Dortmund traditions had travelled to New York – and, in Times Square, music and football brought people together.

The Berliner Philharmoniker’s education programme has been made possible by Deutsche Bank since its inception in 2002. The aim of both partners is to make the work of the orchestra accessible to a wide audience and to inspire people of all ages for music and culture.
