Biography
As a child, Rachel Helleur-Simcock heard a recording of the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker and decided: “I want to do that too!” At the age of six she received her first cello lessons, and later attended the Purcell School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London. She spent a semester as an exchange student at the Eastman School of Music in the USA in 2001. In 2004 the native Briton came to Berlin, where initially she studied at the Academy of Music "Hanns Eisler" with Troels Svane, and then in the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker with Olaf Maninger.
As an assistant, Rachel Helleur-Simcock played with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra as well as the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the NDR Sinfonieorchester. In 2007 she got her first permanent position – as principal cellist with the Deutsche Oper Berlin. From there she moved to the Berliner Philharmoniker in September 2009. In addition to travelling and jogging, her hobbies include reading. She particularly enjoys the books of Charles Dickens.
