Raimar Orlovsky

»The Berlin Philharmonic was my childhood dream even before my studies gave me the first opportunity of hearing this orchestra live in the Philharmonie. From that moment on, one thing for me was certain: it was here or nowhere that I wanted to make music. In my profession and in this orchestra, I especially enjoy the interpersonal communication that music helps to develop between colleagues of the most diverse backgrounds and different ages.«

His violinistic talent runs in the family: Raimar Orlovsky, who has played the instrument since he was four, has four siblings, and two of them are also professional musicians. He himself was trained by Herbert Koloski, Werner Heutling, Thomas Brandis and Walter Forchert and, before coming to the Berliner Philharmoniker, played in various ensembles, including the Stuttgart Bach Collegium and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. From 1993 to 2002 Orlovsky was a member of the Apos Quartet of Berlin. He is one of the founding members of the Berlin Baroque Soloists, a Berlin Philharmonic ensemble that has dedicated itself since 1995 to performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries. With Concerto Melante, another Philharmonic chamber ensemble which performs on historical instruments, Orlovsky devotes himself to early music on the Baroque violin.

Since 1993 he has been passing along his experience of historical performance practice to young musicians as a teacher in the Philharmonic’s Orchestra Academy, with international youth orchestras and in summer music academies. In addition, he is active as a musical scholar and has rediscovered and edited previously lost works by Baroque composers, especially Georg Philipp Telemann. In his free time Orlovsky pursues a variety of hobbies: golf and wine-growing are his favourite forms of relaxation.
