Biography
Moritz Huemer grew up in Liechtenstein and comes from a family of musicians, which had a significant influence on his early musical development. He was particularly influenced by his aunt, who was principal cellist at the Musikkollegium Winterthur for decades. He was fascinated by the versatility of the cello, which can take on the bass function but also play melodies in the highest registers. Through his aunt, he also learnt how fulfilling a career as an orchestral musician can be. “It was clear to me early on that if I wanted to turn playing the cello from a hobby into a career, then it would definitely be in an orchestra.” As a five-year-old, he took cello lessons with Josef Hofer at the Liechtenstein Music School. From 2015 to 2018, while he was still at secondary school in Feldkirch, he was a junior student in Rafael Rosenfeld’s class at the Basel Music Academy, graduating in 2018.
He gained experience in various youth orchestras, including the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra and the Swiss Youth Orchestra. “I learnt to love the symphonic repertoire, and also how it feels to be part of a big sound. Making music together inspired me from the very beginning.” Moritz Huemer completed his bachelor’s degree with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt in Weimar and his master’s degree with Jens Peter Maintz at the Berlin University of the Arts. He met both professors at the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein. He also took masterclasses with Thomas Grossenbacher and David Geringas.
From 2022 to 2024, he was a member of the Karajan Academy, where he was taught by Olaf Maninger. It was formative experience for him: “I learnt a lot from the orchestra members around me; for example, how to fit into the special dark and rich sound of the Berliner Philharmoniker and how to play chamber music as part of a large group,” he says. His first position was as deputy principal cellist at the Komische Oper Berlin. He went on to join the cello section of the Berliner Philharmoniker in May 2025 – and thus also the 12 cellists. In his free time, Moritz Huemer enjoys sports: he plays golf, skis, does yoga and loves hiking.
