Philharmonia Duo | Picture: Janusz Widzyk

Biography

The cello and double bass usually form the tonal foundation in the orchestra, but as a chamber music ensemble, they can show completely different, fascinating facets of themselves. “We are very excited to get even more out of our instruments and ourselves,” say cellist David Riniker and double bass player Janusz Widzyk, who joined forces to form the Philharmonia Duo in 2019 for the Baden-Baden Easter Festival.

What both musicians have in common is their many years of experience as members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Working with orchestral colleagues and the great conductors of our time has had a decisive influence on their sound idea and their feel for outstanding interpretations. They want to bring this wealth of experience into making music together as a duo. Their aim is to broaden their own horizons and those of their instruments with arrangements of well-known, unknown and new works. “It’s like getting a new wind in our sails. We are on a delightful journey of timeless beauty, and of the interplay of our two instruments. Sometimes it’s like we make the seemingly impossible possible.”
