George Benjamin describes his first opera, Into the Little Hill, as “a claw in a velvet glove”. The plot is based on the German fairy tale The Pied Piper of Hamelin, but the piece is anything but a straightforward musical adaptation of a fairytale. In our video, the English composer talks about the long search for a suitable librettist and introduces us to the characteristics of his work which is to be given a concert performance by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Sir George Benjamin as part of Musikfest Berlin. The soloists include soprano Susanna Andersson and alto Krisztina Szabó.
