The European Concert with Mariss Jansons and Andreas Ottensamer

The Berliner Philharmoniker’s European concerts have a special appeal: classical music fans worldwide can experience the guest performance of the orchestra in a culturally and historically significant location in Europe live on radio and on television. With this event, which has been held since 1991, the Philharmoniker commemorate their founding on 1 May 1882. This year, they are going to Cyprus to give their European concert in Paphos, one of the two European cities of culture in 2017.

Romantic music before a medieval castle

The programme of Romantic music will be performed before the picturesque backdrop of the medieval castle which is situated beside the harbour: the stirring overture to the opera Oberon and the virtuoso Clarinet Concerto No. 1 by Carl Maria von Weber, plus Antonín Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony, characterised by its Slavonic folk tone and poetic, atmospheric pictures. The conductor is Mariss Jansons, a longstanding friend of the orchestra. The soloist in Weber’s clarinet concert is Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinet with the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2011.

The concert will be broadcast live at 11am in the Digital Concert Hall.
