Claudio Abbado, conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker from 1989 to 2002, died one year ago on 20 January. His love of music and his insatiable curiosity were a constant source of inspiration to the Berliner Philharmoniker from his first concerts in 1966, and have had a lasting influence the musical work of the orchestra. Even after Abbado resigned from his post, he returned to Berlin every year in May to perform with the Philharmoniker. His concerts were among the musical highlights of the season.
