Video: Kirill Petrenko conducts “4'33''” by John Cage

Following measures taken by the Federal and regional authorities in Germany to contain the corona pandemic, the Philharmonie will be closed until 30 November 2020. In view of this, the Berliner Philharmoniker and their chief conductor Kirill Petrenko added an extra work to their concert on 31 October: 4'33'' by John Cage, which consists entirely of silence and with which the composer wanted to inspire reflection on silence and music. With the recording of this performance, the orchestra and conductor are participating in the nationwide campaign #sangundklanglos / #alarmstuferot, which aims to draw attention to the plight of artists following the lockdown of cultural institutions.
